I’ve been guilty of it. Shaming myself for not hitting goals, or reaching milestones I thought I should have by a certain point in my life. I’ll tell you this; it was nothing short of discouraging. I found myself comparing my success to others, and it completely stopped me in my tracks. Until I realized something that we all have in common- potential.

What seems difficult, at times, is remembering this potential for greatness lies within us all. So, I compiled a short list of keys points for those who have forgotten amidst the daily bump and grind, how to realize their power within.

 Confront the fear

Take a moment to reflect on where you are and where you want to be, and ask yourself- what’s stopping you from reaching your destination? Is it lack of resources? Family members won’t support you? No clear direction?

As much as these may seem like legitimate reasons, the underlying factor behind them all is fear. Fear gives us the ability to make excuses and tell ourselves little white lies to make ourselves feel better about not going after our dreams. It can be the fear of rejection, failure, or the fear of not being good enough for what you really want.

Fear can literally paralyze you and prevent you from taking those necessary steps. But, don’t fret; you can overcome it with taking action! You have to crawl before you walk, and walk before you run. Taking consistent steps towards your goals (regardless of how you feel) is the first step.

Define the destination

One thing I learned early in business is nothing becomes dynamic, until it becomes specific. Getting specific about where you want to go AND how to get there will certainly help you reach the pinnacle of your success.  


Say you want to go on your dream vacation to Bora Bora. You want to go so bad that you can feel the sunshine and the breeze blowing through your hair. You’re excited and more than determined to go. How would you get there? First, you’d do some research for specific hotels, airlines, etc. to reach a decision, make the reservations and go, right?

The same goes for your goals; you must plan to your success.  

Get specific about where you want to go. Do you want to make 1 millions dollars? If so, what products and services will you sell? Who will you sell it to? How soon do you want to make it?  

Break it down to every single detail, and don’t be afraid to get creative! Once you do, you will be given the gift of clarity to bring your vision to reality. 

Just listen

While working in the corporate world, I remember my boss relaying a message to me that changed my viewpoint on leadership. He stated “Great leaders win over people, not arguments. Practice being the last one to speak.” It stuck with me since, and that was over 10 years ago.

You see, people love to be listened to. It gives them the opportunity to express their opinion, makes them feel honored, and gives you a clear viewpoint of their disposition.

Now, I’m not talking about simply “hearing” someone, but actively and effectively listening to them with no interruptions. Effective listening is being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond.

Actively listening to your employees, co-workers, friends, family members, or significant other will benefit you in numerous ways. Here are a few:

  1. Mutual respect is fostered.
  2. Problems are solved faster.
  3. Develops more positive relationships.
  4. Fewer mistakes occur.

Practice the art of effectively listening, and it will change the dynamic of your relationships.

Manage your time.

Without a doubt, managing your time more responsibly will yield a favorable return. But, many people don’t know how to manage their time effectively, which lead to lost profits, increased stress, and strained relationships.

We live in a world full of busy people. But, busyness doesn’t equal success, nor does it give a return on the investment.

The question you should be asking yourself is, are you being productive or are you just busy? The difference between the two is one produces results, and the other produces excuses. How many times have you heard someone tell you that they couldn’t make an event, answer a call, or attend a meeting because they were too busy?

Don’t let your busy-ness get in the way of your business. Here’s a simple guideline I use to manage my time and keep myself focused on doing what produces results:

80% of time is finding new business.
19% follow ups.
1% miscellaneous tasks (e-mails, troubleshooting, content creation, social media, etc).
You don’t have to work 60 hours a week when you have a plan that produces results.

Stop complaining

We all complain. Even if you argue that you are the happiest person in the world, you still complain sometimes. Sometimes we complain without even realizing it. But, complaining can put a real damper on your personal and professional growth.  

Don’t get me wrong, we all must vent every now and then. But, if you find yourself chronically complaining about your lack of happiness, money, stable relationships, etc., you’re doing yourself more harm than good.

No one likes to be around a complainer. It has a negative affect on you and those around you, and it magnifies them to become bigger than they actually are. So, instead of focusing on what is wrong, shift your mindset to focus on what is right!

The best way to kill this nasty habit is by taking action! I can’t tell you how many times I found myself complaining about stuff, only to realize that when I took action on every subject I complained about, everything changed for the better.
